Arlington

Underground tanks removed

Phase One of Arlington’s Olympic Avenue reconstruction project is complete. A contractor removed seven underground tanks near Olympic Avenue. One additional tank was decommissioned in the ground.

The largest tank removed was a 12,000-gallon diesel fuel tank located on Fifth Street, just east of Olympic. Tanks were also removed on Olympic Avenue between Third and Fourth streets, on Olympic directly south of Division Street, and on Second Street to the east of Olympic.

Edmonds

‘Idol’ contest has a winner

Bill Volpentest is the winner of the first Edmonds Idol Competition, entitling him to compete in the state Battle of the Idols on Sept. 17 at the Puyallup Fair.

Volpentest, an Edmonds resident, sang “Superman” by Five for Fighting at the Taste of Edmonds on Sunday. He topped off his performance by stripping off his coat to reveal a superman cape and costume.

Volpentest competed against eight other contestants who were judged on natural ability, quality of performance, showmanship and audience appeal.

Volpentest also won $250 contributed by local businesses.

Everett

NAACP mixer planed Thursday

The NAACP chapter of Snohomish County is holding an after work social mixer from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the PUD administration building, 2320 California St.

Light refreshments and door prizes will be given away.

People can bring their children, who can participate in a coloring contest.

Funk concert coming to marina

Funk rockers Lucius Clay of Port Townsend, whose songs include devotionals to the Dalai Lama, headline the Waterfront Concert Series today.

The free concert is from 6:30 to 8:30 at Port Gardner Landing, 1600 W. Marine View Drive.

Island County

Camano Island aquifers discussed

Island County District 3 Commissioner Bill Byrd will host a town hall meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive, Camano Island.

Island County hydrogeologist Doug Kelly will be the guest speaker. He has been involved in gathering data pertaining to the groundwater aquifers on Island County for 10 years. He will give an update and provide current information regarding groundwater programs including investigations of seawater intrusion.

Lake Stevens

City looks into land purchase

The city is considering purchasing about 120 acres of property from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The land is located west of the Centennial Trail and east of the lake.

On Monday, the City Council approved $12,500 to assess the land’s value.

Lynnwood

Money available for 2007 festivals

Funding for community festivals and events in 2007 is available through the city of Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Department.

Money will be awarded on a competitive basis, subject to available funding.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to effectively stage their event.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 22. Applications are available at parks department headquarters, 19000 44th Ave. W., or by calling 425- 744-6447.

Marysville

Concert series winds down

The final Marysville Parks and Recreation’s Sounds of Summer Concerts Series is this week.

Blues Therapy, a rhythm and blues band, will play at noon today at Comeford Park, 514 Delta Ave.

The final concert in the series begins at 7 p.m. Friday at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road. B-Rich and the Poor Boys, an old-time rock band, is scheduled for that performance.

Hospital offers safety class

Valley General Hospital plans to offer a first aid, safety, CPR and automated external awareness class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at 14701 179th Ave. SE.

The class fee is $48. Prior registration is required.

Mukilteo

Cottage housing to be discussed

A discussion of cottage housing is planned for a meeting of the Mukilteo Planning Commission today.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

City staff plans to present a comparison of laws governing cottage housing around the Puget Sound region.

A consultant will discuss alternative housing demand and a staff member from the city of Redmond will talk about recent changes in that city’s cottage housing laws.

Snohomish

City reviews permit process

The city plans to create new procedures to ensure new development complies with environmental regulations.

The city is reviewing the permitting process after residents complained of the clearing of trees near Myrick’s Fork, a seasonal creek. Developers cleared the trees assuming that the historical creek is dead.

People are encouraged to share environmental studies, reports and maps with the city. Those documents can be sent to Corbitt Loch, the planning director. He can be reached at 360-568-3115.
