Arlington

Car wash will aid team’s trip

The Lady Starzz softball team is having a car wash from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Haggen Food &Pharmacy in Stanwood. The Stanwood-Camano Island team, part of the American Softball Association, is raising money to travel to Colorado to play in a tournament.

Haggen is located at 26603 72nd Ave. NW.

Darrington

Weekend bus service available

Starting Sunday,Community Transit will operate weekend service to Darrington as part of its annual fall schedule. Snohomish County’s transit provider will offer two round trips to Darrington on weekend mornings and two in the early evening.

Community Transit currently operates three morning and three afternoon-evening weekday trips to and from Darrington.

Edmonds

‘Running of the Balls’ returns

Edmonds’ “Running of the Balls” has been resurrected and is scheduled to take place at noon Saturday on Main Street.

In the event, tennis balls are rolled down the Main Street hill in a “race” for prizes. Proceeds from entry fees go to the Sno-King Youth Club and the Edmonds Rotary Club.

Edmonds travel publisher Rick Steves and former Seattle Supersonic James Donaldson plan to be on hand. The event, formerly organized by the Rotary Club, had been discontinued in recent years.

Now it’s called “Everybody Gets to Play Day” and includes a 5K Run-Walk, 8 a.m. at Civic Center Field, 300 Sixth Ave. N.; a Children’s Run at 9 a.m. at the Frances Anderson Center Playfield, 700 Main St.; a “Healthy Body Fair” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Anderson Center, and an eBay auction.

Everett

Class offered on rental housing

Apartment managers, property owners and leasing agents are invited to learn more about how to keep their residents safe at a three-day workshop beginning Sept. 6.

The Everett Police Department’s crime-free rental housing workshops offer tips on choosing good tenants, creating a safe environment and teaching residents about crime prevention.

After property owners complete all phases of the program, their properties will be certified as crime-free rental housing.

The classes will be from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 10-12 at the south precinct, 1121 SE Everett Mall Way. The cost is $15 before Oct. 1 or $20 if you register after that date.

Bodybuilders flex for state prize

Brother-and-sister team Mark “The Shredder” Thacker and Renee Ummel took first place in their individual divisions and first place in mixed pairs at the 2006 Washington Ironman competition in Bellevue on Sept. 16-17.

The event at Bellevue’s Meydenbauer Center had 113 amateur competitors and several professional guest performers.

Thacker is a sergeant with the Everett Police Department. In addition to winning first place in the lightweight division and mixed pairs, Thacker also won first place in the overall pose event.

The duo are now headed for final competitions in Wenatchee.

Lynnwood

AAA travel fair coming soon

AAA Travel is planning a show covering all aspects of travel for Oct. 7 at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

The Travel Expo is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the convention center, 3711 196th St. SW.

Travel merchandise, packing workshops and information on cruises, land tours, domestic and exotic destinations and passport services are among the features planned for the free event.

Presentations on travel destinations are scheduled hourly from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Monroe

School offers various classes

Sky Valley Community Schools, sponsored by Monroe Public Schools, plans to offer a variety of classes this fall.

Classes with start dates between Sept. 25 through Oct. 6 include wilderness hiking, herbal remedies, beginning Spanish and creative friendship cards. Go to www.monroe.wednet.edu for complete details of all classes being offered this fall.

Mukilteo

Actress to bring history to life

Tames Alan, an actress, historian and fashion-history teacher, is scheduled to lead a “Living History” program for adults and teens Thursday at the Mukilteo Library.

The event is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.

Through costume, Alan will illustrate the roles of women in ancient Crete, classical Greece, ancient Rome and among the Celts.

Snohomish

Church offers English classes

Zion Lutheran Church plans to hold an English class from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays at 330 Union Ave. The classes are expected to start Oct. 3 and Oct. 5.

The beginning and intermediate English classes are free and include child care and learning materials.
