Camano Island
Highway access may be restricted
Island County and the Washington State Department of Transportation are making plans to permanently close access to Highway 532 at N. Camano Drive in order to improve safety and help prevent collisions.
The intersection has a history of accidents as drivers turn on and off the highway, according to a statement from the Island County Public Works Department.
Under the new plan, vehicles will be routed to the Sunrise Boulevard intersection, which has a traffic light to help drivers safely access the highway. Westbound traffic on Highway 532 will continue to have direct access to N. Camano Drive.
A public hearing on the plan is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.
During construction, plans call for electronic message boards to advise drivers to use Sunrise Boulevard for safe access to highway 532. Crews will build a temporary turnaround on N. Camano Drive to help drivers adjust to the closure. Construction is expected to be completed this fall.
