Arlington
School board and City Council meet
The Arlington City Council and the board of directors of Arlington Public Schools plan to meet at 5:30 p.m. todayat Haller Middle School, 600 E. First St.
Members of the two groups plan to dine together and tour the school, then meet to discuss business at 6:30. They plan to discuss the new Performing Arts Center, the school district’s election plans and project updates.
The school board and the City Council meet periodically throughout the year.
Everett
Library holds book discussion
The Everett Public Library is inviting more people to join its ongoing Brown Bag Book Discussion.
The group meets at noon on the first Tuesday of each month, giving book lovers a chance to get together to share the books that they’ve been reading or past favorites.
The next meeting is planned at 12 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Main Library Training Room, 2702 Hoyt Ave. Call Scott Condon at 425-257-7638.
Island County
Lodging tax money available
Groups planning events that attract visitors and promote tourism are invited to apply for funding from Island County through the board of commissioners.
The commission plans to accept applications through Aug. 31. The available money is generated from the county’s lodging tax.

Monroe
Official speaks about prison
The August Monroe Chamber of Commerce Luncheon is set to be held on Aug. 14 at Monroe Correctional Complex. The meeting is set to start at noon.
Prison complex superintendent Kenneth Quinn has invited business people to lunch at the prison complex. Quinn plans to speak about the complex.
Participants are encouraged to park at the park-and-ride at Park Place Middle School on Main Street. Shuttle buses will take them to the prison complex beginning at 11 a.m. The last bus leaves at 11:45 a.m.
Quinn is also offering special tours of the facility after the luncheon. The last day to sign up for a special tour is Aug. 10.

Snohomish
Donations of Mah Jongg sought
Snohomish Seniors has just started a Mah Jongg class at the Snohomish Senior Center. The group has only one game to work with and needs more.
If anyone has a Mah Jongg game that’s no longer being used, the senior center would really appreciate having the game as a donation. You can either drop it by 1514 Pine Ave. or call the center at 360-568-0934.
Mah Jongg is based on a game of ancient Chinese origin that was introduced into the United States in the 1920s.
It is played with tiles shaped like small dominoes that are engraved or painted with Chinese designs and Western numerals.
Stanwood
Library plans events for kids
The Stanwood Library is planning two children’s events this week.
Toddlers and preschoolers are invited to listen to stories and make crafts at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Kids 6 years and older are invited to attend a program titled “Possums and other Perplexing Possibilities” at 11 a.m. Thursday. Puzzling stories, songs and activities are planned.
