Larsen returns to visit downtown
U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., is scheduled to return to Arlington, his hometown, to meet with Mayor Margaret Larson to discuss the city’s revitalization plans for Olympic Avenue, downtown’s main street.
The two plan to meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at City Hall, 238 N. Olympic Ave. They also plan to meet with local business owners and discuss the proposal.
Bothell
Nursing career fair set for Friday
The University of Washington’s Bothell campus hosts its third annual Nursing Career Advancement Day on Friday at its campus, 18115 Campus Way NE.
A career and education fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with representatives of more than 20 Washington health care employers and educational institutions. A panel discussion follows from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. It is co-sponsored by the Snohomish County Workforce Development Council.

Youth writing contest coming up
“Gathering” is the theme of the Edmonds Arts Commission’s eighth annual youth writing contest.
Students in grades nine-12 in the Edmonds School District or students who have an Edmonds address are eligible.
Cash awards will be given for first, second and third places in poetry and fiction. Contest winners also will receive a ticket to the 2006 Write on the Sound Writers’ Conference keynote lecture in October and are invited to attend the conference reception.

Bayside neighbors elect new leaders
The Bayside Neighborhood Association will meet at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Everett Public Library Auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave.
The meeting will be dedicated to elections for committee, neighborhood representative and program coordinator positions. No qualifications are necessary for the volunteer positions.

Symphony to host Chamber event
The Everett Symphony Orchestra will host an Everett Area Chamber of Commerce Business After-Hours Mixer from 4:30-7 p.m. Feb. 8 at 2710 Colby Ave.
Dr. Paul Elliott-Cobbs, music director and conductor for the Everett Symphony Orchestra, will be the featured speaker. Participants will learn about the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce and meet chamber members.

Auditor tabbed as guest at town hall
Island County Commissioner Bill Byrd has invited county Auditor Suzanne Sinclair to be the guest speaker at his next town hall meeting from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Camano Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.
Sinclair plans to discuss the county’s new voting machines and voter tabulation system. She also will answer questions about any other roles her department fulfills.

Arts commission discusses events
The Lake Stevens Arts Commission will meet 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the City Hall Annex, 1812 Main St.

Citizens Academy starts up soon
The Lynnwood Police Department is accepting applications for its 16th Citizens Academy, a free 16-week class to familiarize residents with police procedures.
The class will meet from 7-10 p.m. Thursdays from Feb. 2 to May 18 at the Lynnwood Police Department and Municipal Courtroom, 19321 44th Ave. W.

Library hosts toddler story time
The Marysville Public Library invites youngsters 18-36 months old to the library for stories, songs and fingerplay for toddlers.
The event will be at 11:15 a.m. today at 6120 Grove St.
Funding is provided by the Friends of the Marysville Library.
Also, the Marysville Public Library and the Snohomish County Literacy Coalition offer adults learning to speak English a time to practice skills.
The Talk Time program, run by coalition volunteers, will be 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the library, 6120 Grove St.

Police get $50,000 federal grant
The Snohomish Police Department was recently approved for a $50,000 federal grant to develop a special response team.
The department will select and train officers for the team. The tactical team will respond to high-risk emergency situations that threaten public safety.

Charter review panel to meet
The Snohomish County charter review panel has scheduled a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the county administration building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.
The job of the 15-member panel is to consider changes to the county’s charter, which controls how government work is carried out.
The group plans a discussion of possible reforms, which would then go to voters in the fall.
