Arlington

Parade to close Olympic Avenue

Olympic Avenue will be closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. Saturday for the Santa Parade.

The closure will be from Division Street to First Street.

Edmonds

‘Light a Light’ to help youths

The city is providing an opportunity to light a light in memory of a loved one and help young people this holiday season.

A tree is strung with lights at the entrance of the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St. Each light represents a donation to the Edmonds Youth Scholarship Fund, which enables children to participate in Edmonds parks, recreation and cultural programs who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity.

The tree will remain lit until Jan. 3. After the holidays, the tree will be planted at Yost Park.

To light a light, call 425-771-0230, and the city will send a form, or stop by the Frances Anderson Center.

Everett

Riverside plans holiday events

Join the Riverside Neighborhood Association’s annual caroling event.

Santa Claus and Riverside neighbors will sing carols and spread holiday cheer at 6 p.m. Dec. 17 in the neighborhood. Songbooks, bells and candles will be provided. Call Judy Corcoran at 425-339-1150.

The association also sponsors a holiday lighting contest for homes and businesses. This year’s theme is snowmen. Call Bob Creamer at 425-303-0739.

Donations help families at holiday

The Holiday Giving Project, a service of Catholic Community Services designed to provide low-income families with gifts, grocery gift certificates and food baskets during the holiday season, is now under way.

Volunteers are needed to adopt a person or family. This year, more than 200 community members still need assistance.

Last year, 725 families, 3,287 individuals and 2,171 children were given Christmas gifts and food.

Council meeting moved to Monday

The Everett City Council meeting has been moved from Wednesday to 8:30 a.m. Monday because several council members are scheduled to attend the National League of Cities conference in Charlotte, N.C., Dec. 6-10.

The council meeting will be in Everett City Council chambers at 3002 Wetmore Ave.

‘Nutcracker’ tickets on sale

Tickets are on sale for “The Nutcracker Ballet” for performances at 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 10, and 2 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Ave. in Everett.

Ballet Bellevue, directed by Viktoria Titova, will perform the holiday classic. Tickets are $12 to $32.

Island County

Tickets for Santa event available

Tickets are available for Breakfast With Santa, which will start at 9:30 a.m. Dec. 10 at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island.

Santa and his elves, clowns, face painters and a balloon man will be there to entertain kids. Pictures with Santa will be available for $10.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children, available at the center and at the center’s thrift store on Highway 532.

Lake Stevens

Spend an evening with J.P. Patches

The Lake Stevens Lions Club presents “A Holiday Celebration With J.P. Patches” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at North Lake Middle School, 2202 123rd Ave. NE. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.

J.P. Patches is known for his children’s television show, which ran from 1958 to 1981 on KIRO TV.

Bring your cameras for pictures with Santa Claus.

The club also will be accepting donations of nonperishable food items for the Lake Stevens Food Bank and eyeglasses, sunglasses and hearing aids for the club’s vision and hearing-impaired programs.

The cost is $10 for two adults and four children, $5 per couple and $3 single admission, and includes beverages and cookies.

Lynnwood

2 reappointed to city panels

Kay Wood has been reappointed to the Lynnwood Arts Commission and Robert Fuller has been reappointed to the Lynnwood Public Facilities District Board by the City Council.

Members of the seven-member arts commission are appointed to three-year terms. Wood’s term will expire Dec. 31, 2008.

Members of the PFD board serve four-year terms. Fuller was first appointed in 2001. His new term will expire at the end of 2009.

Marysville

City offers CPR, first aid training

The city Parks and Recreation Department will offer first aid and CPR classes Saturday at the Marysville Public Library.

Instructor Sheila Davis will teach basic first aid from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CPR for infants, children and adults class will be from 1:45 to 4:45 p.m. Both classes meet state requirements. Certification is through the American Safety and Health Institute and is valid for two years.

The cost is $20 per course. To register, call the parks office at 360-363-8400.

Monroe

Prison building gets top rating

The state Department of Corrections recently announced that the new training center at the Monroe Correctional Complex is the first prison system in the country to receive a national organization’s gold rating for its environmentally friendly design.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating is given by the U.S. Green Building Council to projects that show a high level of commitment to conservation and renewable energy through design and operation.

The 10,000-square-foot building in Monroe, which was completed in 2004, provides space for correctional worker training, general education classrooms, a computer lab, a defensive tactics area and offices. Construction on the $2.35 million project began in October 2003. Officials say the environmental features of the center will pay for themselves in reduced operations and maintenance costs over time.

Mountlake Terrace

Water tower tree to be lit tonight

The annual lighting of the tree atop the water tower will be tonight at Evergreen Playfield, 22205 56th Ave. W.

Warm beverages and cookies will be served at 6 p.m., and music by The Flashbacks will start at 6:30 p.m. Brier Elementary School students will sing carols at 7 p.m., followed by the tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus.

The tree was placed on top of the 145-foot tower at Jack Long Park as a joint training exercise among the city’s police, fire and public works departments.

The tree-lighting ceremony is sponsored by the Terrace-Brier Lions Club, led by Mayor Jerry Smith and his wife, Judi.

Mukilteo

Tree lighting is set for Saturday

The annual Mukilteo Christmas tree lighting will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Ave.

Festivities include a program with Santa Claus and entertainment.

Snohomish

American Indian crafts to be sold

Cedar Tree Native flute circles will host an American Indian arts and crafts event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at 717 First St. Featured items for sale will include flutes, drums, beadwork and other handmade goods.

Snohomish County

Libraries increase Spanish materials

Sno-Isle Libraries has increased the availability of Spanish language materials in six community libraries to better serve the county’s growing Spanish-speaking population.

The Arlington, Coupeville, Freeland, Langley, Stanwood and Sultan libraries have new Spanish-language materials for all ages. Every three months, the six libraries will rotate to make new materials regularly available.

The new, smaller browsing collections are augmented by permanent Spanish collections at eight larger Sno-Isle libraries: Edmonds, Lynnwood, Marysville, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Oak Harbor and Snohomish.

Stanwood

Open house at Merrill Gardens

Merrill Gardens invites the public to its sixth annual open house and bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Merrill Gardens, 7212 265th St. NW.

Tours of the building will be offered, and refreshments will be served.

Gary Hood will perform Christmas music from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Santa will visit from noon to 3 p.m.

Food bank holds raffle on Saturday

The Sultan Food Bank will offer a Split-the-Pot raffle from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday during Winterfest 2005 at the Sultan High School, 13715 310th Ave. SE.
