Assessor stepping down next year

Baenen, who has been county assessor for 11 years, did not explain his decision in his brief e-mail announcement.

A state audit during the summer faulted several Island County departments, including the assessor’s, for falling too far behind on updating property tax adjustments. The audit blamed poor communication and outdated computer software.

At the time, Baenen acknowledged the problems but said the auditors had overstated the problems.
