The Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force is planning a volunteer work day to plant trees to improve salmon habitat.
The planting will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Portage Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, 5427 Cemetery Road.

Nursing career fair rescheduled
TheUniversity of Washington’s Bothell campus has rescheduled its third annual Nursing Career Advancement Day for 12:30 to 3 p.m. Jan. 27. The event was originally scheduled to take place next month. More than 20 health care employers and educational institutions will be available to discuss nursing career and educational opportunities.

City will discuss next year’s budget
The Edmonds City Council will hold a 90-minute work session on the proposed 2006 budget at its meeting tonight.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the Public Safety Complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

Grand park discussed tonight
The Northwest Neighborhood Association will elect its 2006 executive committee at 7 tonight at its monthly meeting. Everett Parks and Recreation officials will also present their plan to upgrade Grand Avenue Park and take feedback from residents.

Hybrid vehicles, an energy awareness display and a Halloween fun run are at Naval Station Everett’s Public Affairs Office this week to help sailors and civilians understand the importance of conserving energy.

Regional road planners to meet
The Island and Skagit County Regional Transportation Planning Organization will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdayat Skagit Valley College’s Oak Harbor Campus, in Oak Hall, Room 306 at 1900 SE Pioneer Way.
The group prioritizes transportation projects and decides how and where to spend federal funding for regional projects.

Halloween fest events scheduled
This year’s Downtown Halloween Festival on Monday offers a variety of activities for all ages. There will be a costume parade down Main Street with staging at 4:30 p.m. at the Boys &Girls Club and a parade beginning at 5 p.m. down Main Street to City Hall.
There will be a carnival with raffles, goodie bags, contests, games, prizes and candy from 5 to 8 p.m. inside the Lake Stevens Community-Senior Center, 1808 Main St., and a merchant trick-or-treat with candy and photos from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Main Street Center.
The Not-So-Haunted House will be open 5 to 8 p.m. at the Family Center, 1803 123rd Ave. NE, behind the library, and there will be a teen dance for middle and high school students from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Boys &Girls Club, 1609 E. Lakeshore Drive.

Festival grants available from city
Applications for Lynnwood’s Festival Fund grant program are now available through the city.
The Festival Fund was created to provide public support for community festivals and celebrations in Lynnwood that have a broad-based appeal and provide family-oriented activities. Funding comes from the city general fund.
Detailed information about the grant program, eligibility and program requirements are included in the application package.

Marysville
Public hearing time changed
The Marysville hearing examiner will conduct a public hearing on an appeal of a permit issued for Pacific Northwest Development LLC to build a 183,565-square-foot retail building with tire, garden and lube shops at the northwest corner of Highway 9 and 64th Street NE.
The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall, 1049 State Ave. The hearing, which is open to the public, previously was scheduled at 7 p.m.
Monroe
Schools host math information night
Families of middle school and younger students are invited to learn more about math instruction in Monroe’s public schools at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library at Park Place Middle School, 1408 W. Main St.
Information and examples of math lessons will be provided to help families support their child’s success in math. There also will be discussion of the textbook and use of the Connected Mathematics Program.
The evening will also include an outline of Monroe’s program to encourage students who excel in mathematics.
Council discusses sex offender law
The Monroe City Council will have a work session at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at council chambers, 806 W. Main St.
The council will discuss a new sex offender ordinance, which has been developed based on a similar law that the city of Issaquah adopted.
Issaquah passed an ordinance barring registered Level 2 and 3 sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of schools or day care centers. The law is the first of its kind in the state.
It requires violators, including those who knowingly rent or lease housing to offenders, to pay up to $5,000 in fines and spend up to a year in jail.

Scary stories coming to library
An hour of scary stories, songs, games and crafts will come to the Mukilteo Library on Saturday.
The program, for kids ages 5-11, takes place from 2 to 3 p.m. at the library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd. Kids may wear costumes if they wish.

Flu, pneumonia shots for seniors
Flu shots will be available from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at St. Michael’s Church, 1514 Pine Ave. in the lower level Small Hall. The event, hosted by Snohomish Seniors, is for adults 65 and over.
The shots are administered by Visiting Nurse Services of the Northwest. The cost for flu shots is $28. Pneumonia immunizations will also be available for $40.
Stanwood
Lions’ 53rd year of lutefisk dinners
The Stanwood Lions Club will celebrate more than half a century of strong culinary tradition with its 53rd annual Lutefisk Dinner, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Stanwood High School, 7400 272nd St. NW.
The meal is all you can eat, family style. Cost is $15 per person, $7 for kids 7-12 years old and free for kids younger than 7.
