Stress relief party targets auto glass
Ever get so stressed you feel like swinging something heavy through a car windshield?
You’ll get the chance on Friday, and every swing will help the Arlington Boys &Girls Club.
A stress-relieving “Car Smash and Bash” will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Arlington Boys &Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE. For every dollar donated, people will get a swing.
Free massages, soft drinks and hot dogs will be provided.
Edmonds
Celebration will mark construction
A public celebration to mark the beginning of construction on the Edmonds Center for the Arts will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N.
Last week, Sellen Construction of Seattle began the $18 million renovation project, which is expected to be completed in October 2006.
Edmonds travel writer and TV host Rick Steves will speak at the event. Pearl Django, a gypsy jazz band, will play from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and refreshments will be served.

Island County
Hunting and guns hot hearing topics
Island County commissioners will meet in a special session for a public hearing about two proposed ordinances regarding restricting the use of firearms in some areas and allowing hunting in others.
The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the Performing Arts Center at Coupeville High School, 2 S. Main St. in Coupeville.
One proposed ordinance would restrict discharge and use of firearms near Deer Lagoon on south Whidbey Island, while allowing hunting on the Camano Ridge property on Camano Island.
The other proposed ordinance would be the same, except it would also allow hunting on the Kettles Trail property in central Whidbey Island.
The commissioners moved the meeting to the high school to accommodate the expected audience.
Lake Stevens
Library will offer Junie Jones Party
The Lake Stevens Public Library invites families to a Junie B. Jones Party from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1804 Main St.
The party will include trivia and games about the children’s book character created by award-winning author Barbara Park.
Lynnwood
Parks soon will be free of tobacco
An event to mark the beginning of a ban on tobacco in Lynnwood parks is scheduled for 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wilcox Park, 5215 196th St. SW.
Mayor Mike McKinnon will read a proclamation at the event declaring Lynnwood parks to be tobacco-free.
A sign will go up at Wilcox Park, declaring it to be a tobacco-free zone. The ban will take effect in other city parks as signs are installed in coming weeks.

Flu shots offered at Alderwood mall
Flu shots will be available at Alderwood Mall Sept. 30 through Oct. 2. Offered through Clinical Health Systems, the shots will be given from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30 , 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 1 and noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 2
Flu shots cost $25. Pneumonia shots cost $35.
Marysville
Actors will read banned books
Professional actors from the Book-It Repertory Theatre will read from books that have been banned or challenged in the United States at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Marysville Public Library, 6120 Grove St.
The program for those 11 and older. Funding is provided by Friends of the Marysville Library.
Monroe
Event to help Katrina victims
Monroe firefighters are teaming up with the American Red Cross to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief. On Saturday, firefighters from Fire District 3 will hold a “Tip-a-Firefighter” event at the Monroe Ixtapa Restaurant, 19303 U.S. 2.
Firefighters will serve lunch and dinner between noon and 9 p.m. with support from the restaurant’s managers and staff. Visitors can also tour the fire engines and learn about disaster preparedness and fire safety.
All donations collected at the event will go to the Red Cross for hurricane victims.
Mukilteo
Lighthouse open one last weekend
Saturday and Sunday are the last two days this season the Mukilteo Lighthouse and gift shop will be open.
Lighthouse tours will be available, and the gift shop will be open from noon to 5 p.m. both days. The gift shop will reopen the first three Saturdays in December for the holiday season.

Snohomish
Maze celebrates Silvertips team
The Stocker Farms corn maze opens today at 8705 Marsh Road. This year’s corn maze celebrates the Everett Silvertips Hockey Club.
Participants can play either of two games to help them find their way through the miles of trail.
The “Bear Facts” quiz asks trivia questions that lead participants to the solution. “The Puck Stops Here” is a way for participants to build their perfect hockey team. Either way, they can enter to win free tickets to an upcoming Silvertips game.
Bring a canned food item and receive a $1 discount on regular admission. The farm also will rent pedometers for $1 as a benefit for the Snohomish Food Bank.
The maze will be open through Oct. 31. Hours are 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 4 to 10 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Prices are $7 for ages 6 and older, and free for 5 and under with adult admission.
