Buy paver stones for vets’ memorial
A memorial commemorating veterans of all wars is being planned to join the existing memorial at Legion Park downtown.
Those who wish to participate can purchase an inscribed granite paver stone that will be installed around the new monument.

Developer will meet with council
Edmonds developer Bob Gregg will discuss a proposed public-private partnership with the Edmonds City Council at its meeting today.
The discussion is open to the public but a public hearing is not scheduled.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Council chambers at the public safety complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

Everett
Police helping Special Olympics
Local police will raise money for the state’s Special Olympics Aug. 27.
Police will serve as waiters at Red Robin restaurants around the state and collect tips. Officers will be at the restaurants in Everett, Lynnwood and Monroe from noon to 8 p.m.
Proceeds will help provide year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with disabilities.
Last year, police from around the state raised $77,000. The goal for this year is $100,000.
Island County
81st county fair starts Thursday
The 81st annual Island County Fair runs for four days this weekend.
Gates open each day at 9:30 a.m. starting Thursday and continuing through Sunday at the county fairgrounds, 819 Camano Ave. in Langley on south Whidbey Island.
Events include animal competitions, exhibits, a parade Saturday and live music, including Foghat, known for its hit “Slow Ride.”
Admission is $6, with discounts for military, seniors and kids.

Free picnic at family center
Residents are invited to bring a favorite teddy bear or doll to the free teddy bear picnic from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Lake Stevens Family Center at North Cove Park.
The picnic will include sandwiches, juice, vegetables and dip, a story time and a craft project for pre-kindergarten through elementary school children and their parents or caregivers.
Donations of juice and craft supplies are welcome.

Learn about child car safety seats
Certified child passenger safety technicians will host a free clinic Wednesday to help people with child car seats.
The clinic, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lynnwood Babies “R” Us on 196th Street SW and Alderwood Mall Parkway, will check to see if the wrong seat is used, if it isn’t installed correctly, or if the child isn’t properly secured.
Those attending must arrive no later than 1:30 p.m. since the check-up takes about 30 minutes. Attendants are encouraged to bring their child, their vehicle’s owner’s manual and their child seat instructions. For more information, call Lynnwood police at 425-744-6938.

Two free concerts this week at parks
The final two free concerts in the city’s Sounds of Summer Concert Series this year will be Wednesday and Friday.
Sandy Sanderson &the Rhythm Riders will perform country and western music from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rotary Pavilion in Comeford Park, 514 Delta Ave., and the Mark Whitman Band will perform rock and blues from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Lions Centennial Pavilion in Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road.

City has grant money available
The city has $4,000 in grant funds still available for a nonprofit, volunteer, educational, Chamber of Commerce or public agency.
The money is part of $15,000 the city had set aside for community grants this year.
Eligible activities include special events or festivals, tourism development or economic development programs. The grant requires recipients to provide matching funds.

Tonight council looks at flooding
A hearing on the city’s flood regulations will take place at a City Council meeting at 7 tonight in the George Gilbertson Boardroom, 1601 Ave. D.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency has notified the city that its floodplain regulations do not comply with federal requirements and seriously jeopardize the city’s eligibility in the national flood insurance program.
The deadline for compliance is Sept. 16.
The new law makes minor adjustments to the floodplain regulations as recommended by the state Department of Ecology.
Also on the agenda is confirmation of John First to the parks board.
The next meeting is Sept. 6.
Stanwood
Ham radio club meets Thursday
The Stanwood-Camano Amateur Radio Club’s next monthly meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Twin Cities Sportsman’s Club, in the 26800 block of 64th Avenue NW.
The meetings are open to all ham radio operators and short-wave radio listeners.
