Tribe to receive police grant funds
The Stillaguamish Tribe will receive a $109,091 grant from the federal Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.
The Stillaguamish department was one of 80 tribal police agencies in 25 states that received almost $2.1 million in grants.
The grants are typically used to purchase equipment, pay for training or hire more officers.

Everett
Bus route added to Airport Road
A new bus route in south Everett was added Sunday in response to increasing residential and economic growth.
The new line will provide service between Airport Road along 100th Street SW to Everett Mall Way. Only one transfer will be required to travel to the Everett Mall from Community Transit Routes 100 and 101.

Boys &Girls Club has computer lab
Just in time for the new school year, the North Everett Boys &Girls Club opened a new computer lab Monday designed to be used for homework and other learning activities.
The computers also will run programs developed through the Boys &Girls Clubs of America.
Henry Cogswell College made the computer lab possible. The North Everett club served more than 16,000 children in 2004.

Library hosts preschool group
The Lake Stevens Library is hosting a free play group for preschoolers and their parents.
The program provides an opportunity for parents to support each other while their children play with youngsters the same ages.

School addition debuts tonight
An open house to tour the newly completed addition at Lakewood Elementary School is set for 6:30 to 8 tonight at 17000 16th Drive NE.
A new wing containing four classrooms was part of the $2.3 million project. The 1958 portion of the main building was converted into a library, computer lab and staff areas.
The event will include self-guided tours and refreshments.
Lynnwood
City councilman undergoes surgery
Lynnwood City Councilman Martin Nelson had his gallbladder removed Aug. 22 and is expected to make a full recovery, said his wife, Charlotte.
Nelson was granted a leave of absence from the council for the rest of August, council President Loren Simmonds said.
Nelson is expected to return to his council duties soon, his wife said. He will continue to pursue re-election against challengers, Mark Smith and Craig Spicer in the primary election Sept. 20. The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election Nov. 8.
Family center marks two years
The second anniversary of the opening of Edmonds Community College’s Center for Families will be celebrated at a party from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 16.
The celebration will include music, birthday treats, party favors and tours with remarks by Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.
The center provides on-campus child care for students and a Head Start preschool, cooperative preschools and infant-toddler parent education classes.

Teen program set at library
The Marysville Public Library invites teens to share their art, poetry, writing and ideas, such as how they spent their summer vacation, during a special program Wednesday.

AARP barbecue set for Thursday
AARP’s Marysville chapter will host a barbecue at noon Thursday at the Ken Baxter Senior-Community Center, 514 Delta Ave.
The Baxter Drama Thespians will perform after the picnic.
The group meets the first Thursday of each month.

Wireless facility plan gets hearing
A public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8 on a proposal to build a wireless communication facility in Harbour Pointe.
The Mukilteo hearing examiner will conduct the hearing at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

Historical society hosts homes tour
The Snohomish Historical Society will present its 34th annual Tour of Homes Sept. 18 from noon to 5 p.m.
Seven historical homes will be open to the public.
This year’s tour includes homes featured in the August issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine and on the television program “If Walls Could Talk.” In addition, Victorian Manor will show a special display of Victorian wedding gowns.
Tickets for the tour may be purchased the day of the tour at the Waltz Building, 116 Ave. B in Snohomish. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors. Tickets also will be available starting Thursday at Speckled Hen, Kusler’s Pharmacy, Bungalow Basics, Star Center Antique Mall, Weeds Variety and Joyworks, all in Snohomish.

Garden club kicks off new season
The Snohomish Garden Club will have its first meeting of the 2005-06 season on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Snohomish High School, 1316 Fifth St.
The scheduled speakers are Little and Lewis, Bainbridge Island artists best known for their concrete sculptures. They will be discussing their new book, “A Garden Gallery.”
The club meets September through May on the second Monday of each month. Annual dues are $15; all people interested in learning about gardening are welcome.

Planning panel has opening
The city is accepting applications for a vacancy on its planning commission.
The commission makes recommendations to the City Council on land-use policies and plans, as well as specific development proposals.
The commission has a maximum of seven members who serve five-year terms and who must live within city limits or the city’s urban growth area.
The commission meets at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in City Hall.
