Police station to be dedicated
The new police station and city council chambers will be dedicated in a ceremony before the next regular council meeting.
The dedication begins at 5 p.m. Monday with an open house at the new station, 110 E. Third St. Staff members will be stationed throughout the building to answer questions.
A 6 p.m. ceremony will include remarks by Mayor Margaret Larson, retired Police Chief Steve Robinson and recognition of those who worked on the $8.35 million project.
The building is designed to give the police department room to grow to 50 employees.

Writers to gather for conference
The 20th annual Write on the Sound Writers Conference will be Saturday and Sunday at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St.

Everett
Former student is EvCC trustee
A former student is now a trustee at Everett Community College.
James Shipman of Snohomish received his associate’s degree from Everett Community College and is a former EvCC student body president.
After graduating from EvCC, Shipman attended the University of Washington, then earned his law degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane. He is a partner at the law office of Podrasky &Shipman in Everett.
Shipman will serve as a trustee until 2010. He replaces Sanford Kinzer, who moved to Ellensburg.
Shipman has served as the chairman of the regulatory committee of the Snohomish County Citizens Cabinet since 2003, and also sits on the Snohomish County Priorities of Government Committee.
Granite Falls
Railroad Days honors Red Cross
The annual Railroad Days celebration of Granite Falls’ history will be this weekend.
The main day of activities will be Saturday, with breakfasts and luncheons at various civic group halls, a horseshoe-pitching tourney and museum tours.
At noon Saturday, the grand parade begins, with the Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross serving as grand marshal. Check-in will be at 11:30 a.m. at Stanley Street and Indiana Avenue.
Carnival rides will also be available Friday and Sunday.
Lake Stevens
Preschool kids to hear stories
The Lake Stevens Library will host a free preschool story time focusing on fall leaves and pumpkins, featuring stories and songs for children 3 to 5 years old. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
The story time will be 11 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the library, 1804 Main St.

Drop off items on cleanup day
The city will have a free cleanup and drop-off event for residents from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the city shop, 20525 60th Ave. W.
Residents may drop off unwanted household clutter, yard debris and scrap metal at no cost.
Major household appliances will be accepted for fees of $10 to $15, depending on the type of appliance.
Residents must bring proof of their Lynnwood residency. Only cars, passenger vans and pickups will be admitted.

Girls are invited to join dance team
Girls in second through eighth grades are invited to join the Kamiak High School Dulcineas Dance Team at its 10th annual Junior Dance Camp from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the school, 10801 Harbour Pointe Blvd. in Mukilteo.
Participants will learn a routine to the song “Accidentally in Love.” Girls will have the opportunity to perform the routine during halftime at the Oct. 21 Kamiak football game.
Lunch will be provided, and all campers will receive a silk-screened sweat shirt, a ribbon and a certificate. The cost is $30, $23 each for two children in the same family.

Fire district offers annual open house
To kick off National Fire Prevention Week, Fire District 7 plans its annual open house Oct. 9. Residents can learn about fire safety from noon to 4 p.m. at fire district headquarters, 8010 180th St. SE, Snohomish.
This year, firefighters will are focus on the danger of burning candles. Home fires ignited by candles have spiked in recent years.

Author to speak about gardening
The next monthly meeting of the Snohomish Garden Club will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Performing Arts Center at Snohomish High School, 1316 Fifth St. This meeting is free and open to the public.
The featured speaker is Debra Prinzing, who will talk about her new book, “The Abundant Garden: A Celebration of Color, Texture and Blooms.”
The book, photographed by Barbara Denk, uses Bainbridge Island gardens to identify and demonstrate nine design concepts that promote a feeling of abundance. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
The garden club meets the second Monday of the month from September through May.

Resident planners needed for city
The city is accepting applications for two vacancies on its planning commission. The commission makes recommendations to the City Council on land-use policies and plans, as well as specific development proposals.
The commission has a maximum of seven members who serve five-year terms. They must live inside the city or its urban growth area.
The commission meets at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Mondays of each month at City Hall.
