Some trails, roads shut for summer

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff of the summer season at many U.S. Forest Service campgrounds, but some trails and back roads in Darrington will remain closed because of severe flooding in 2003.

Start dates must still be set for repairs to Suiattle Road No. 26, White Chuck Road No. 23 and Mountain Loop Scenic Byway (between Barlow Creek and Bedal Pass). A massive flood in October 2003 wiped out bridges and road sections at those spots. Construction projects still are awaiting environmental reviews.

The flood also destroyed 30 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in the Glacier Peak Wilderness. A map of the detour route is available online at www.fs.fed.us/ r6/wenatchee/pct/.
