City’s state audit clean once again
The state Auditor’s Office found nothing major amiss in its annual review of the city’s financial and legal activities during 2003.
During the past six audits, the state has not issued any findings for Arlington. State auditors reviewed the city’s accounting practices, including cash receipts, payroll and the police department, as well as competitive bidding compliance and long-term debt.
Edmonds
Official to discuss TV news career
Edmonds City Council member Mauri Moore will be the featured speaker at a meeting of VFW Post 8870 on Wednesday.
The event will begin at noon at the South County Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. in Edmonds.
The topic will be Moore’s 29 years of experiences in the TV and communications business. She served as chief of NBC’s Israel bureau and producing segments for “Nightly News” with Tom Brokaw on five continents.

Plant a tree, help revive a ravine
Port Gardner neighbors are planting trees 10 a.m.-noon Saturday as part of the neighborhood’s Forgotten Creek ravine project.
Helpers should bring gloves, and meet at the ravine’s Bond Street entrance across from the old train depot garden. Also bring hand pruners, garden rakes and shovels if you have them.

Island County
Oregon fly-fishing topic of meeting
The Whidbey Island Fly-Fishing Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Race Road Fire House, 1164 Race Road in Coupeville.
The guest speaker will be Mike Benbow, who will talk about fly-fishing Oregon’s Grande Ronde River, one of the state’s premier steelhead rivers. Benbow, The Herald’s business editor, has extensive experience fly-fishing in the Northwest.
The meeting is open to the public. Social hour starts at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.
Latest addition to Camano project
The latest addition to Camano Commons, Brindles’ Marketplace, is scheduled to open at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Terry’s Corner, between the intersection of Highway 532, N. Camano Drive and Sunrise Boulevard.
Owners Don and Bonnie Brindle said their idea is to establish a market that is similar to Pike Place Market, selling fish and seasonal items. A wine cellar and art gallery are also planned. The commons project is an attempt to blend businesses with space for artists and the public to gather.

Drainage board meets tonight
Drainage Improvement District No. 8 commissioners will update the 2005 budget and an annexation request by Barclays North. The board also is expected to act on parcels with unpaid assessments.
The board will meet at 6:45 tonight for a workshop on vouchers and the regular meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at district headquarters, 1911 Vernon Road.
Marysville
Neighborhood discussion tonight
The Marysville Planning Commission will discuss how to encourage residents to become involved through active neighborhoods, with Wendy McClure of the city of Everett’s Office of Neighborhoods. Other agenda items include land-use targets and alternatives.
The commission’s workshop to update the city’s comprehensive plan begins at 7 tonight at City Hall, 1049 State Ave.
Mill Creek
Northwest poet will read at library
Northwest poet Mary Lou Sanelli will read and discuss poems from her latest poetry collection, “The Immigrant’s Table,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mill Creek Library, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway.
Sanelli will also share reminiscences of growing up in New York City’s Little Italy and her experiences as a Northwest transplant. Her essays have been heard on National Public Radio and Northwest Public Radio.

Because of the Veterans Day holiday, the Board of Fire Commissioners for Snohomish County Fire District 7 is changing the date of its next meeting.

Firefighters offer child-seat advice
Two firefighters at Snohomish County Fire District 1 recently received certification as child passenger safety technicians.
Firefighters Janette Anderson and Candy Hanson completed the 32-hour training sponsored by Snohomish County Safe Kids. Child passenger safety experts educate parents and others about the proper installation of child car seats.
Fire District 1 now has nine employees certified as child passenger safety technicians. The department offers car-seat checks by appointment on the third Tuesday of each month.

Puppets lead kids’ library program
“George,” an 8-foot-tall giraffe puppet, and a cast of other animal puppets will lead the audience through a kids’ program titled “Life is Fun” at the Mukilteo Library on Wednesday.
The program begins at 7 p.m. at the library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.
The importance and fun of reading is stressed as part of the show, designed for kids ages 2-10. It is presented by the Giraffe and Staff Puppet Co.

Senior center gets $9,000 from tribe
The Snohomish Senior Center recently received a $9,000 donation from the Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund.
The center will use the money to continue the center’s 25 programs and services and help defray the costs of professional staff. The donation will assure continuity of services, as the center works toward building a new 5,000-square-foot center.

Schools seek ideas on facilities
The Stanwood-Camano School District has planned two town hall meetings to collect the community’s ideas about what the district’s goals should be and how to combine those goals with planning for facilities.

The second meeting will be at 6:30 Nov. 17 at Elger Bay Elementary School, 1810 Elger Bay Road, Camano Island.
