Arlington

Yost descendants planning reunion

The annual Yost family reunion will be at noon Sept. 18 at the Stillaguamish Valley Pioneer Hall and Park, 20722 67th Ave. NE.

The Yost family is sending word early so relatives can be contacted in time to make plans. A potluck meal will start at 2 p.m.

Family members are asked to bring pictures, genealogy materials and stories to share. Group pictures will be taken.

Edmonds

Preschool begins fall enrollment

Meadowdale Preschool has begun enrollment for its 2004-05 school year.

The school has classes for pre-kindergarten children, a beginning program for 3-year-olds, and a multiage afternoon program.

Everett

Council finalist list is approved

The City Council on Wednesday formally approved the finalist list for the council seat being vacated by Councilman Doug Campbell.

A three-member council screening committee approved the list Aug. 12.

The council will interview the finalists and choose a new council member in a special meeting at 10 a.m. Sept. 2 in council chambers, 3002 Wetmore Ave.

The finalists are planning commissioner Drew Nielsen, restaurant owner Jim Staniford and business consultant Robert Strickland. The three were chosen from a list of 11 applicants.

Fire chief honors council member

Fire Chief Murray Gordon on Wednesday presented outgoing Councilman Doug Campbell with a wooden plaque honoring his work with the fire department.

Gordon also gave Campbell a fire department patch.

Campbell said he “always felt very close” to the fire department. Firefighters were early supporters in his first council election race in 1991, he said.

Campbell plans to return to his native Nebraska.

Island County

Dig for spartina on Camano

People for Puget Sound, a nonprofit environmental group based in Mount Vernon, joined forces with the Island County Noxious Weed Board and the Island County Marine Resources Committee to sponsor “Dig Days” to remove the invasive weed spartina from county shorelines.

The first dig day was earlier this month on Whidbey Island. The second will be 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the end of Iverson Road on Camano Island.

Bring a lunch and beverages. Water, snacks and tools will be provided.

Lake Stevens

School choirs host car wash

The Lake Stevens High School choirs Jubilation and Touch of Class will conduct a car wash 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the Les Schwab Tire Center at Frontier Village, 923 Vernon Road. Donations will help pay for choir functions in the coming school year.

Lynnwood

Sign up your tot for art classes

An art class for tots will run 12:15-1 p.m. Thursdays Sept. 16 to Oct. 14 in Lynnwood.

Hands-on projects will introduce children to the materials, ideas and techniques of art. The cost is $20.

Monroe

County honors longtime farmers

Snohomish County will honor owners of farms that have been under one family’s ownership and operated for 100 years at the Evergreen State Fair. The fairgrounds is at 14405 179th Ave. SE off U.S. 2.

The annual program has honored 23 farm families since 2000 with certificates of appreciation, reproductions of the farms’ historic photos and inclusion of the farms’ history in a traveling exhibit and slide presentation. Mountlake Terrace

Swimming lesson registration open

Registration for fall swim classes in Mountlake Terrace is under way at the city’s recreation pavilion, 5303 228th St. SW.

The city recently renovated its pool and has the water heated to 88 degrees. Classes are offered mornings, afternoons and evenings for children of all ages. Schedules with specific classes and times are available.

Duplex expansion will get hearing

The city’s hearing examiner will conduct a public hearing on a request to expand a two-unit duplex in a single-family residential zone at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 in the multipurpose room of Fire Station No. 3, 10400 47th Place W.

The request to expand the duplex was submitted by Max Rice. The duplex is on a 14,180-square-foot lot at 8129 46th Ave. W.

Ice cream sale to help seniors

Former employees of Snohomish Valley Ice Cream will donate their time for a day of scooping to benefit the Snohomish Senior Center noon-5 p.m. Saturday at 902 First St. Ten percent of the day’s sales will be used for the center’s programs and services.

There also will be drawings for an introductory flight lesson donated by Kandace Harvey, president of the Snohomish Seniors board of directors and owner and operator of Harvey Airfield.
