Street closure delayed again
The Everett City Council delayed a vote Wednesday on a proposed downtown street closure for the third time in four weeks.
The Snohomish Artist Guild is planning its second annual Pop &Arts Festival for Sept. 10-12.
The guild proposed closing Colby Avenue between Everett and Pacific avenues for the festival. But several business owners protested, saying the street closure would drive customers away.
City officials thought they had hammered out an agreement with the guild that would have shifted the street closures to minimize the effect on businesses. But guild director Cliff Verhoeff presented the council Wednesday morning with yet another street-closure plan.
Council members tabled the issue for another week to study Verhoeff’s proposal.
Senior center gets county grant
Snohomish County is giving the Everett Senior Center a $7,500 grant study recommendations on how to better use space at the center – and possibly whether to build a new center.
The needs assessment will also review programs that the center offers, executive administrator Deborah Wright said.
“We’re sort of growing out of the senior center in some ways,” she said.
The solution might simply be to reconfigure space at the center, she said.
In addition, parking has been a problem at the center, Wright said.

City sewer fix to cost $200,000
The city has determined repair estimates for damage to the main sewer line underneath 271st Street NW. The project is expected to cost about $200,000 to fix up to 120 feet of sewer pipe that is about 20 feet deep, said Public Works Director Bill Beckman.
Construction will start Friday. Lane closures or detours will be posted.
The damage was first detected May 19, when city crews noticed backups in a shallow manhole near Heritage Park, a few blocks north of 271st Street NW, the main drag downtown.
Crews vacuumed the pipe and sent remote-controlled video cameras to find the source of the problem. They found concrete had gotten into the pipe. The concrete came from construction of foundation pilings at the QFC mall, Beckman said.
Crews accidentally drilled through a sewer pipe, he said. Then, when they filled the hole with concrete for the pilings, some of the concrete got in the sewer and spilled into the main line on 271st Street NW, which caused the blockage.
Beckman would not comment on who was at fault or who is expected to pay for the work, citing the city’s policy not to discuss potential litigation.
