The Everett Medic One Foundation is having a benefit breakfast 7:30-9 a.m. Feb. 12 at the Everett Events Conference Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave.
The Everett Medic One Heart Saver School Program has been recognized nationally as a leader in implementing automatic external defibrillators.
Firefighters teach local students cardiopulmonary resuscitation and also how to use defibrillators.
Funds from the breakfast will help with student training and to place more defibrillators in schools.

plan caucuses
Island County Democrats will vote for their 2004 presidential nominee at caucuses starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at five locations.
They will be at North Whidbey Middle School in Oak Harbor, Coupeville Elementary School in Coupeville, South Whidbey High School in Langley and at the Camano Community Center.
Sign-in is at 9:30 a.m. Caucuses will end about noon.

The Northwest Tobacco-Free Partnership is planning a round-trip bus ride from Lynnwood to Olympia on Thursday to tell legislators about health dangers for workers exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke.

Scrapbook class offered Friday
Instructor Melissa Bostrom will teach a series of scrapbook classes for the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department.
The first class is “How Do I Love Thee?” It is designed to show participants how to create a scrapbook to honor someone who has touched their hearts. The class is 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at the Marysville Community Campus, 7431 64th Drive NE.
The class is $20 and includes a 6-by-6-inch album.
Additional work sessions will be offered the third Sunday of each month for $12 for a half day and $20 for a full day. Other supplies are required. For details or to register, call the parks office at 360-651-5085.

Public meeting
on Cougar Park
An open house with neighbors of Cougar Park will be held 7-9 p.m. on Thursday at Mill Creek City Hall.
Information will be distributed through the Brighton Neighborhood Association newsletter as well as fliers to homeowners.
The city is expecting to seek construction bids for park improvements in May, with construction ending in August.
Mothers group looks at safety
The Tuesday meeting of the MOMS Club of Mill Creek for stay-at-home mothers will feature a presentation on safety.
The meeting is 10-11 a.m. at Cedar Cross Church, 1210 132nd St. SE.
Sus Jess, a detective with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, will speak on safety for mothers and their children. Her presentation will include techniques for escaping an attacker and how to be on the alert for sexual predators. She will demonstrate the techniques, and there will be an opportunity to practice them.

Critical areas open house set
n open house on protecting critical areas 5:30-7 p.m. next Monday at City Hall.
Critical areas are wetlands, wildlife conservation areas and other environmentally sensitive sites. City regulations must protect the areas under the state’s Growth Management Act.
Although Mountlake Terrace adopted protection regulations more than 10 years ago, state laws have changed since then. Cities and counties must update regulations this year to meet the new standards.
The open house provides a chance for people to learn about critical areas. Interested people also may call 425-744-6266 to be placed on an e-mail list for future meetings on the topic.

Task force seeks nominations
The county DUI and Traffic Safety Task Force is accepting nominations for its annual awards ceremony in March.
The task force is looking for people who have made a difference in traffic safety during 2003. Achievement can have been in education, drug treatment, medicine, corrections and other areas in which work has been done to help improve safety on the roads.

Candlelight honor for ‘43 chaplains
Stanwood’s American Legion Post 92 is sponsoring a candlelight service to honor four chaplains who died in the World War II sinking of the Dorchester, a U.S. Army transport ship hit by a German submarine’s torpedo Feb. 3, 1943, in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The four chaplains, three Christians and one Jew, gave up their life jackets to others and remained on the ship.
