Tree of Reflection back at hospital
The Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation is sponsoring the 16th annual “Tree of Reflection” to raise money for hospital programs.
The foundation offers people the opportunity to remember loved ones by purchasing a personalized ornament.

Arts commission taking grant bids
The Edmonds Arts Commission is accepting applications for Cultural Tourism Promotion contract awards from nonprofit arts and cultural organizations that serve city residents.
Up to $9,000 may be available this year for contracts for services that promote the arts and attract visitors to Edmonds. Projects might include brochures, banners, posters or other advertising materials. Generally no more than $2,000 is awarded to any one organization.
The funds used for this program come from the Lodging Tax Funds allocated to the Edmonds Arts Commission by a City Council resolution.
Applications are available at the City Arts Office, 700 Main St., Edmonds or by calling 425-771-0228. The deadline for filing applications is 5 p.m. Jan. 20.
Everett
Holiday caroling Friday at park
The Riverside Neighborhood Association is looking for holiday carolers.
The association, the Everett Council of Neighborhoods and the city are sponsoring a two-hour sing-a-long at 7 p.m. Friday at JJ Hill Park, on the northeast corner of Hewitt Avenue and Broadway.
Santa will be there, and hot cider will be served.
Sears Retirement Club to meet
The Everett Sears Retirement Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. today at Evergreen Lanes, 5111 Claremont Way.
Members are asked to bring items for the food bank. They will also exchange gifts.
Island County
Group tries to save historic farm
A group in Coupeville is trying to save the last undeveloped 30 acres of the historic homestead farm of Fred and Anna Krueger.
The old farm, with its meadows, wetlands, woods and trails, is within city limits and likely to be developed unless the Friends of Krueger Farm can raise $1.46 million to buy it.
The group has raised more than $200,000 but needs to raise an additional $80,000 by Jan. 8 to secure an additional nine months for the rest of the fund drive, participant Nancy Paris said.
To contribute, tax-deductible donations may be sent to the nonprofit Whidbey Camano Land Trust, P.O. Box 1453, Langley, WA 98260. Checks should be written to WCLT, Krueger Farm.

Students pack care packages
Students at North Lake and Lake Stevens middle schools will be packing holiday care packages Friday for U.S. Marines in Iraq.
The packages will be shipped from Camp Pendleton, Calif., to arrive before Christmas. The schools each sponsor a platoon of Marines and each month send a box with individual packages for the troops.
Residents can donate items or cash to help ship the boxes in Operation Interdependence, sponsored in Lake Stevens by the Lions Club. For a list of items to donate, go to the Operation Interdependence Web site at www.oidelivers.org.

Toys for Tots drive kicks off
Lynnwood firefighters and Veterans of Foreign Wars are joining with the Lynnwood Fred Meyer store to collect toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign.
New and unwrapped toys can be dropped off at collection boxes at the Lynnwood Fred Meyer and also at Lynnwood fire stations through Saturday. For more information, call Martin Spani at 425-918-5401.

Road work extends closure
Snohomish County public works officials have extended the full closure of 152nd Street NE between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily through Dec. 31.
Thomco has been granted permission to close both lanes between 51st Avenue NE and 67th Avenue NE to install a water main. Intermittent lane closures are possible.

Mountlake Terrace
Council OKs pavilion lot work
The Mountlake Terrace City Council has approved a contract of more than $100,000 for improvements and repairs to the Recreation Pavilion parking lot.
Work could start within 20 days after the contract is completed with Lynnwood-based Precision Earthworks Inc.
The work includes: widening the driveway at the pavilion’s main entrance and adding parking spaces, improving access to the entrance from the upper parking lot by a pathway ramp, installing a walkway along the pavilion’s east side and improving vehicle circulation patterns.
Mukilteo
District to discuss personnel issues
The Mukilteo School District Board of Directors will hold a special meeting at 11 a.m. Jan. 8 to discuss personnel matters.
The discussion will be a closed-door executive session.

Fire auxiliary wrapping gifts
The Silvana Fire Department Auxiliary will wrap presents to raise money to help furnish the new fire station on Happy Valley Road.
The gift wrapping will be 3-8 p.m. Saturday at the old fire station in the 1400 block of Pioneer Highway.
Snohomish
Rotary donates to local causes
The Snohomish Rotary spread some holiday cheer this month by donating $500 to the Snohomish Food Bank, the senior center, the youth center and the local chapter of Boys Scouts. Local Rotarians raised the $2,000.
For those interested in joining, the group, it meets at 7 a.m. on Thursdays at the Collector’s Choice Restaurant on Glen Avenue.

Low-vision group meets

Calendar honors local elders
Everett Community College United Native American Council students and volunteers have worked for two years to prepare a calendar that honors their elders and education.
The sepia-tone calendar features 12 Northwest and Alaskan elders such as Billy Frank Jr., Vi Hilbert, Anna Halla, Ray Moses, Iola Bill, Bertha Dan and Bruce Miller.
Each portrait includes a quote that “encourages education and tells our history” council adviser Earl Martin said.
