Wickers building a historic place
The Wickers Building last month was listed on the state Heritage Register of Historic Places.
The Wickers Building was built in 1919 by the Puget Mill Co. to provide a grocery and supply store for residents of Alderwood Manor. The building, located near the Alderwood Manor station for the Interurban Railroad, housed a U.S. Post Office, starting in 1920.
The building was a major landmark and a general store serving the Alderwood Manor Demonstration Farm and surrounding area.
The Wickers Family purchased the store in 1933, and continued to operate a grocery in the building until the 1960s. The building was moved as part of the freeway interchange improvements at I-5 and 196th Street SW to Lynnwood’s new Heritage Park at the corner of Alderwood Mall Parkway and Poplar Way and restored to its historic character.
The Wickers Building is the proposed location for the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau’s Visitor Information Center when Heritage Park opens in early 2004.
