Appreciation day at airport
Arlington Airport Appreciation Day is 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday with events on both sides of the airport.
At the east entrance, 18204 59th Drive NE, free airplane rides will be offered to kids ages 7-18 with parental permission. The Air Station Aviation History Center will be open, too.
At the southwest entrance at the corner of 172nd Street NE and 51st Avenue NE, a combat tournament for control-line model airplanes is scheduled. The dogfighting – which involves one plane flying through and cutting its opponent’s tail streamer – will run all day.

Edmonds
Taste event gets Top 100 honors
The American Bus Association announced last week that A Taste of Edmonds, a three-day event organized by the Greater Edmonds Chamber of Commerce, has been selected as one of the Top 100 events in North America for 2004 by an elite tourism industry selection committee.
The recognition will be published as a supplement to the October issue of Destinations magazine. The article says A Taste of Edmonds offers excellent entertainment value to both groups and individual travelers from around the world.
Peter Pantuso, the bus organization’s president and CEO, said the event was recognized as a potential magnet for tourism dollars “at a time when re-energizing domestic tourism is so important to our spirit and our economy.”
Everett
Three-county transit planner
You can now find out which buses to take to get from Everett to other parts of Snohomish, King and Pierce counties by using an online trip planner.
The City Council on Wednesday agreed to join the Regional Trip Planning system, which includes Community Transit, King County Metro Transit and Pierce Transit.
Everett Transit joined the system Aug. 1 in expectation of Wednesday’s formal agreement, said Tom Hingson, transportation systems manager for Everett Transit.
Riders can type in beginning and ending destinations, and the trip planner will show bus routes and times.

Island County
Sno-Isle needs Island County rep
The Sno-Isle Regional Library System is looking for a representative from Island County to serve on its Americans With Disabilities Act advisory committee.
Three volunteers from Snohomish County and two from Island County advise library officials on how to comply with the act.
Committee members must have a disability or represent an organization that serves the disabled population in the two counties.
Candidates should submit a letter of intent to the Sno-Isle Board of Trustees, 7312 35th Ave. NE, Marysville, WA 98271. Letters must be received no later than Oct. 31.
Lake Stevens
Sewer district board to meet
Lake Stevens Sewer District commissioners will meet at 3:30 p.m. today. The agenda includes updates on Lakemont Vista ULID 13, treatment plant No. 2, Lundeen Phase 2 and district comprehensive plan amendments.
The commissioners will meet at the district office, 9327 Fourth St. NE, Suite 8, Everett. The meeting is open to the public.
Marysville
Vegetarian cooking class set
For those who would like to pursue a plant-based diet, dietitian Karen Lamphere will teach how to prepare meatless meals in a vegetarian cooking class 7-9 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Jennings Memorial Park Barn, 6915 Armar Road.
The class, offered through the Marysville Parks and Recreation Department, will cover simple ways to add whole grains, beans and other meatless entrees into your diet. Recipes will be demonstrated and samples will be provided.
The class cost is $18, plus a $2 materials fee payable to the instructor on the day of the class. For registration, call the parks department at 360-651-5085.
Monroe
Coaches plan reunion weekend
A contingent of current and former Monroe High School coaches are throwing themselves a thank-you party to celebrate the effort that has made Bearcat coaches a special group.
Coaches Bill Dow, Roger Miller, Lee Ottini and Randy Olson have organized a weekend of events beginning Oct. 3 for all current and former Bearcat athletes and coaches.
Oct. 3 from 7 to 11 p.m. there will be a “bull session” at the Monroe Eagles Club, 114 N. Lewis St. The session is open to all former players and any community member who wishes to reminisce with any of their former coaches – some who were coaching as far back as the ’50s.
The morning of Oct. 4, Bearcat coaches will have an informal game of golf at the Blue Boy golf course. That evening from 6 p.m. to midnight is a dinner and dance for the coaches.

Speaker to discuss must-read books
Nancy Pearl of the Washington Center for the Book will speak at 7 p.m. today at the Snohomish Public Library, 311 Maple Ave.
Pearl will talk about the latest and greatest must-read books. Friends of the Snohomish Library is sponsoring the program, which is open to teenagers and adults.
Stanwood
Help plan senior center’s future
The Stanwood Senior Center invites the public to a community planning session 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 1 at the center, 7430 276th St. NW.
The meeting will give people an opportunity to discuss ideas for the future direction that programs, facilities and staffing should take. Participants will be able to buy a lunch and take a tour of the facilities.

The road closure for 236th Street NW has been extended to Oct. 13.
