Food bank needs volunteers

The Arlington Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help distribute food to the town’s neediest residents.

With the high demand of the winter months fast approaching, food bank manager Pam Titus said help is currently needed more than food.

Nonperishable canned food and toiletries are also welcomed. The food bank can be reached at 360-435-5757.

Camano Island

Property values take large leap

Recently revised property assessments have shocked some residents of Camano Island who have seen home values jump by more than one-third.

Property owners can expect to pay corresponding property tax increases.

Gary Bur with the county appraiser’s office said the spike was a result of home sales in 2005.

Residents may appeal new assessments to the Island County Board of Equalization. The board can be reached at 360-679-7304.

Edmonds

Mayor to present budget tonight

Mayor Gary Haakenson is scheduled to present his 2007-08 budget at a meeting of the City Council tonight.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the public safety complex, 250 Fifth Ave. N.

A hearing on an appeal against remodeling plans for the Old Milltown shopping mall is also scheduled. Only those who have spoken at previous meetings on the subject may testify on the appeal.

Everett

Riverfront project details emerge

The first details of a proposed redevelopment project along 211 acres near the Snohomish River were made public late Monday afternoon.

Environmental documents on the proposed project call for the construction of up to 1,500 condos and apartments, 1.2 million square feet of mixed commercial uses, and 150,000 square feet of hotel space.

The Everett Planning Commission is holding an open house on the project at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at Everett Station’s Weyerhaeuser Room, 3201 Smith Ave. A meeting focusing on the scope of the project will follow at 7 p.m.

The city will collect public comments on the first phase of environmental review until Nov. 6.

Design standards workshop tonight

The Everett Planning Commission is scheduled to talk about new proposed design standards for houses, condos and apartments just outside of the downtown area.

The meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Everett Station’s Weyerhaeuser Meeting Room, 3201 Smith Ave., is open to the public. Commissioners will also listen to feedback from residents.

Marysville

Panel offers three names for school

A new $79 million high school that will open in Marysville by 2011 could get a geographical or historical name.

An advisory panel’s top recommended name is Marysville-Getchell, after a pioneer resident who was a surveyor in the area.

The panel’s No. 2 and No. 3 names are Marysville-Bayview, which describes the location and a housing area, and Marysville-East, also based on its location in the district.

The names have been forwarded to the Marysville School Board.

Monroe

Cancer program set for women

Valley General Hospital plans to have “Look Good … Feel Better” program from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at 14701 179th Ave. SE.

The free program teaches techniques to female cancer patients to combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment.

Mountlake Terrace

Concert to help Amish families

The Mountlake Terrace High School music department is planning a benefit concert at 7 p.m. Thursday for the victims and families of the recent Amish school shooting in Nickel Mines, Pa.

The concert will feature the Mountlake Terrace High School jazz bands and vocal ensembles. Entry is by donation.

Concertgoers also are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for the Mountlake Terrace Food Bank.

Drawing group to meet Fridays

A life drawing group is scheduled to meet from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays from this week through Nov. 17.

The group will meet at 832 Third St., at the intersection with Loveland Avenue.

Life drawing employs live models. The fee is $15 per meeting.

Kiwanis clubs set spaghetti dinner

The Snohomish Kiwanis Club and the Tillicum Kiwanis Club plan to have an annual spaghetti dinner from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Parish Hall at Fourth Street and Union Avenue. Tickets are $7 for adults, $3 for children 6 to 11 and free for children 5 and younger.
