City Council annexes schools

The Everett City Council approved annexing Silver Lake and James Monroe elementary schools into the city Wednesday.

The Cascade Highlands neighborhood, home to Monroe Elementary School, was annexed last year through a general election vote. The Murphy’s Corner neighborhood, home to Silver Lake Elementary School, was annexed through petition in October.

The Everett School District requested the two schools be annexed to gain police and permitting services, Everett planning director Alan Giffen said after the district first applied for annexation.

The annexations will not alter the current tax structure for the schools or the district.

$16,000 raised in memory of Starr

A fundraising dinner held Dec. 5 at Mardini’s Restaurant raised more than $16,000 to build an indoor climbing wall at the Snohomish Boys &Girls Club in memory of Marine Cpl. Jeffrey Starr.

Starr, of Snohomish, died in combat in May 2005. He was 22.

The money raised will cover the cost of the wall, said Brian Starr, the Marine’s father. The excess will be used as a scholarship for a Snohomish High School senior bound for college.

The family hopes to dedicate the climbing wall on May 30, 2007, the two-year anniversary of the Marine’s death, Brian Starr said.

Contributions can still be made to Operation Homefront, P.O. Box 704, Snohomish, WA 98291-0704.
