Everett: Council approves tourism marketing contract
Everett’s desire to draw tourists here is about to get a boost.
The City Council on Wednesday approved a $123,000 marketing and management contract with the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau.
Two other firms bid on the contract, but city officials said the tourism bureau was the most experienced and best fit firm to run the City Concierge, a visitor information center, and to market the city and its events and attractions.
The nonprofit bureau will spend roughly $26,000 on various advertisements, and produce 50,000 copies of a combined visitor guide and calendar of city events, according to the contract. About $45,000 of the bureau’s bid will go toward employee wages, benefits and a management fee.
The city will pay for the tourism contract from a pot of about $250,000 that hotels and motels collect in city bed tax revenue every year.

Snohomish: City Council rejects senior center bids
The City Council on Tuesday rejected bids for the construction of a new senior center in Snohomish.
The bids had come back about $250,000 higher than supporters had hoped. The lowest bid that the city received for the project was $1.75 million, city manager Larry Bauman said. That’s more than the project’s original estimate of $1.5 million.
The plan to build the 6,000-square-foot center at a 1.27-acre lot on Fourth Street has been delayed by obstacles.
In late 2005, the city identified 96 places where it believed human remains were buried. The discovery caused the project to move to Fourth Street.
Later, it turned out that the soil at the site Fourth Street was contaminated. In 2007, the city removed two piles of oil-contaminated soil and two underground water tanks at the site. The city has spent about $300,000 on the project to date, Bauman said.
For more information, call the city at 360-568-3115.
