Everett: Roberts to study future air needs

Everett City Councilman Paul Roberts was recently appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to serve on the Aviation Planning Council — a new advisory board asked to recommend how best to meet long-term statewide aviation needs.

The former Everett planning director, who now heads up Marysville’s public works department, has substantial experience with air operations.

He worked on land use plans for southwest Everett in 1996, which laid the groundwork for an expansion of The Boeing Co.’s massive assembly plant on the airport’s northern boundary.

The Aviation Planning Council, which includes transportation and aviation experts, is scheduled to hold its first meeting in November. A final report is expected from the group by July 2009.

Key issues the council plans to address are the state’s role in meeting demands for increased commercial air operations, Puget Sound’s commercial air capacity and the risk commercial aviation poses to small communities.

Parks chief to talk with Bayside

The Bayside Neighborhood Association is scheduled to hold its monthly meeting Wednesday at Everett Public Library’s auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Ave. The association plans to talk with Everett Parks Director Paul Kaftanski about Bayside Park next to the community garden between Grand Avenue and West Marine View Drive.

Weeds and trash have been cleared from the small neighborhood park and grading work and the installation of handrails and a conversation circle have been installed. Kaftanski is scheduled to talk with neighbors about the city’s park strategic plan and listen to ideas about what neighbors would like to see happen at Bayside Park.

The group also plans to talk about mini-grand proposals for next year, the election of new officers and ideas on how to increase neighborhood involvement.
