Everett: Shannon Affholter to be sworn in Wenesday

Everett’s newest councilman, Shannon Affholter, is set to be sworn in with council incumbents Drew Nielsen, Brenda Stonecipher and Ron Gipson before Wednesday’s Everett City Council meeting.

Affholter, 39, a field representative for pharmaceutical maker Merk &Co. and a community volunteer, won his seat in November’s election with 60 percent of the vote.

In a hard-charging bid for office, Affholter raised a record $44,827 in political donations, according to the state Public Disclosure Commission.

Affholter, who will vacate his seat on the park’s board this month, is also a block watch organizer in Everett’s Northwest Neighborhood.

He replaces Bob Overstreet, who retired this year after serving on the Everett City Council for 30 years.

The council meets Wednesday at 8:30 at the Everett City Council chambers, 2830 Wetmore Ave.

Mukilteo: Teen writers can share their work

Teen writers can share their work at an event planned for the Mukilteo Library.

The event, called Write Stuff, is scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 24 at the library at 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd.

Friends of the Mukilteo Library is sponsoring the event. Food will be provided.

Lake Stevens: Meeting to discuss conservation tax

The Snohomish Conservation District has scheduled the last of three meetings for Feb. 13. to discuss a possible tax that would take effect in 2009.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the district’s office, 528 91st Ave. NE in Lake Stevens.

The proposed $5 tax could affect about 212,000 Snohomish County properties.

The Snohomish Conservation District, based in Lake Stevens, restores wildlife habitat and advises farmers and other property owners on how to protect the environment.

State law allows conservation districts to seek the tax.

The first meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 8 at Cavelero Mid High School, 8220 24th St. SE. The second meeting is planned for 6 p.m. Jan. 14 at the Stanwood PUD, 9124 271st St. NW.

Snohomish: Computer class set at library

The Snohomish Senior Center and Snohomish Library are teaming up to offer a two-session computer class at the library at 9 a.m. on Jan. 16 and 23. The class is for those wanting to learn about surfing the Internet and basic e-mail.

There will also be an open question-and-answer session on Jan. 29 at the library. The session is to cover a wide range of topics, from learning about using a mouse to attaching something to an e-mail.
