Longer tax break for low-income housing
The Everett City Council voted 6-1 Wednesday to extend the horizon of the tax break for new downtown apartments and condos that include low-income housing units.
Qualifying projects will be able to receive a property tax break for 12 years. Previously, the tax break was for 10 years. Projects without low-income units will see tax breaks reduced from 10 years to eight. The amendments reflect changes to state law, Everett’s planning director Allan Giffen told the council.
The council also voted to eliminate council approval for each application for the program, and agreed to report detailed information about the program annually to the state Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development.
Four downtown condos that have been approved for the tax break are currently planned or under construction.

Businesses are expecting trick-or-treaters and Jay’s Market plans to offer free photos of children in costume.
