County approves special library bond election

A special election May 20 for the proposed Arlington library project has the approval of the Snohomish County Council. The County Council voted Monday to put the funding measure on the ballot.

Voters in the Arlington School District and the city of Arlington will vote on whether to approve issuing an $8.8 million bond to fund a new library.

In 2006, voters rejected an $8.1 million bond for a new library. The measure fell short of the 60 percent needed to pass by just 28 votes.

If approved, the $8.8 million bond is estimated to cost homeowners 14 cents per $1,000 of the assessed value of their property. A homeowner with a $300,000 house would pay $42 a year. The population of Arlington has grown enough in the last two years that the proposed cost to taxpayers is less than the proposal in 2006, bond supporters said.

Tulalip

Tribes vote to increase distribution by $250

Members of the Tulalip Tribes voted Saturday to increase their per capita distribution by $250 per quarter. The vote was part of the tribes’ biannual general council meeting.

The per capita distribution comes primarily from the tribes’ natural resources department, said Les Parks, a former tribal board member who now leads a grass-roots committee of nongovernmental tribal members. Most income from the casino pays for government operations and is folded back into tribal enterprises, Parks said.

The next general council meeting is October.
