Tulalip: Walk to raise money diabetes
Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall is one of several Snohomish County public officials who will share their stories about diabetes to support Saturday’s American Diabetes Association’s North Sound walk.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the Tulalip Amphitheatre for the walk, which begins at 9 a.m. and has lengths of three-quarters of a mile and three miles. The amphitheater address is 10400 Quil Ceda Blvd.
The Step Out to Fight Diabetes fundraiser has special meaning to Kendall, who has type 2 diabetes.
Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include a lack of physical activity and a family history of the disease. “One brother was diagnosed late in life and unfortunately too late,” he said. “He lost both his legs and then his life from complications.”
Nationally, nearly 21 million adults and children have diabetes, although a third of those are undiagnosed. In Snohomish County, 29,300 adults, roughly the population of Marysville, are diagnosed with diabetes.
To highlight his commitment and raise awareness to the cause, Kendall challenged Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson to join the walk, and both mayors signed proclamations this spring outlining their commitment to fight the disease.
Snohomish County Sheriff Rick Bart will come back to Tulalip for a second year as the North Sound walk emcee. Having a family history of diabetes, Sheriff Bart took it in stride when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes five years ago.
Bart became involved in ADA walks about 12 years ago. “It gives everyone a feeling of hope and community,” he said.

Stanwood: Banner auction next week
Sixty hand-painted banners are scheduled to be auctioned as a benefit for the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation at 1 p.m. Oct. 14, at the Bonnie Cole Building at the Stanwood Fairgrounds.
The banners were painted in the spring by local artists and were displayed in Stanwood and Camano Island throughout the summer.
Painted on sturdy “Sunbrella” material, the banners reflect a flora and fauna theme.
Proceeds from the auction are scheduled to be paired with a grant that encourages artists to place permanent public art in the community.
For more information, contact the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation at 360-629-687 or via e-mail at info@s-caf.org.
