Marysville: Speed lights go up at schools
City workers last week began installing flashing signs at five elementary schools to give extra alert to drivers to reduce their speed.
The speed limit when the beacon flashes is 20 mph, regardless of whether children are present, according to the city.
The solar-powered flashing yellow beacons were provided through a $35,845 state grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Marysville police, the city department of public works and the Marysville School District worked together to pursue the grant.
The lights are being installed in front of Allen Creek, Kellogg Marsh, Liberty, Marshall and Sunnyside elementary schools. The 20 mph speed limit signs and flashing beacons are posted within designated school zones which, according to state law, extend 300 feet in either direction from marked crosswalks.
Stanwood: Gun locks save children’s lives
Since 2004, Stanwood police have distributed more than 1,000 free firearm safety kits. The cable style locks fit most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns, Stanwood Police Chief Tom Davis said. When used properly, the locks can prevent children from using guns.
The safety kits are available free to residents of Stanwood, Camano Island, Silvana, Warm Beach and other local areas. The kits are provided in partnership with Project ChildSafe and the U.S. Department of Justice.
More information: Kits are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the Stanwood Police Department, 8727 271st St. NW, or call 360-629-4555. No appointment is necessary. Please do not bring firearms to the police station.
