Arlington: Learn about your ancestors

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society plans an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the society library, 135 N. Olympic Ave., in downtown Arlington.

Genealogy librarians are set to offer help with family history projects. A fundraiser sale of Halloween decorations, used books and home-baked treats also is planned.

Senior center to offer health fair

Stillaguamish Senior Center’s Senior Health and Social Services Resource Fair is set for Wednesday at the center, 18308 Smokey Point Blvd., in Arlington.

The focus is preventive medicine, healthy life style choices and Medicare options offered through various social service agencies and local resources. Presentation topics include the new health care law, sleep disorders, consumer safety for seniors, estate planning and hospice care. Flu shots will be available.

Marysville: Know a worthy volunteer?

Do you know someone who should be recognized for their volunteer efforts?

If you do, Mayor Jon Nehring wants to hear about them.

A Volunteer of the Month application form can be downloaded from the city of Marysville website at tinyurl.com/MvilleVolunteer.

The new award recognizes Marysville residents for their volunteer contributions and commitment to community service.

The voluntary service demonstrated should be unpaid and not an employment responsibility. Individuals or groups may be nominated by an individual, agency, corporation or organization. There is no deadline for submitting nominations.

Send completed nomination forms to Lynn Schroeder in the Mayor’s Office, 1049 State Ave., Marysville, WA 98270 or fax them to 360-651-5033.

Award recipients will be recognized at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 1049 State Ave., at regular City Council meetings on either the second or fourth Monday of every month. Volunteers receive framed certificates, city coffee mugs and other items.

Oso: Community meetings planned

Oso Community Center’s board of directors is set to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the center just off Highway 530. All people in the Oso community are welcome to attend.

Oso Fire District 2011 budget review is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the fire hall next door to the community center. The public is welcome.

Whidbey Island: Trillum deal sealed

Whidbey Camano Land Trust officials this week completed the paperwork to buy and preserve the 664-acre Trillium Forest on central Whidbey Island. More than 1,485 individual donations made the purchase possible, officials said.

The property is expected to be open to the public in the spring. Until then, people are asked to participate in a contest to formally name the woods. Deadline is Nov. 15.
