Marysville: Now a Tree City USA

For the first time, the Arbor Day Foundation designated Marysville as a Tree City USA, recognizing the community’s commitment to urban forestry.

Mayor Dennis Kendall also proclaimed April 10 as Arbor Day in Marysville, with many group tree plantings scheduled Saturday and the following two weeks. Almost 1,000 trees were planted last year throughout the city.

To earn the recognition, Marysville met four standards: creating a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the Forest Service.

Marysville: Help needed for school

Volunteers are being sought for a project aimed at improving security and aesthetics at Marshall Elementary School from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The event is being coordinated by Marysville churches working with the city of Marysville and Marysville School District.

Event organizers hope for more than 100 volunteers at the school, 4407 116th St. NE.

They need people to bring wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, gloves, buckets for gravel, hand saws for trees and tree pruners.

Work includes clearing brush and branches in a wooded area, filling holes in the track and planting grass seed, painting stripes on the playground and landscaping work.

Stanwood: Scandinavian heritage

Guests are welcome to attend the next meeting of the Daughters of Norway at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Sons of Norway Hall, 9910 270th St. NW, Stanwood.
