Edmonds: City offers sports programs

Athletes can join basketball, softball, volleyball or pickle ball leagues being organized by the city of Lynnwood. The different leagues — some which have upper and lower divisions — start play in early January, with softball starting in late March. Registration for the leagues is open.

Lynnwood: Rotary club donates to food bank

More than $850 and 400 pounds of food were collected in one day for the Lynnwood Food Bank during a recent food drive by the Rotary Club of Lynnwood.

The Lynnwood Food Bank serves an average 1,062 households each month and distributes 869,000 pounds of food each year to low-income families, mostly in south Snohomish County.

It is the only public food bank in Lynnwood.

Mill Creek: Get building permits online

People can now go online to apply for and buy over-the-counter permits from the city of Mill Creek.

At MyBuildingPermit.com, people can use a credit card to purchase mechanical, plumbing and re-roofing permits, as well as others. The Web site also has links to resources, inspection checklists and construction tips.

Users of the site must have a printer, a working e-mail address, a valid credit card, contractor approval and an Adobe Acrobat software.

Monroe: Free writing class available for seniors

The East County Senior Center offers a free writing class at 2 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 276 Sky River Parkway.

Writing experience isn’t required; beginners are welcome. The class helps people write their memoirs that can be used as a gift to others.

Mountlake Terrace: Check child safety seats

Parents can get their children’s safety seats checked free of charge at an event being planned by the city of Mountlake Terrace.

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 2 at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department parking garage, 5906 232nd St. SW.

The city’s police and fire departments are teaming up to offer the free seat checks. The seat checks are planned to continue during the first Wednesday of each month.

Appointments last about 30 minutes. People are asked to bring the manuals for their vehicles and safety seats.
