MOUNT RAINIER – Paradise Inn would be closed for two seasons as part of a $30 million construction and rehabilitation proposal for the popular visitor area.
The proposal also calls for replacement of the 60,000-square-foot Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center with a 20,000-square-foot building that is more architecturally attuned to Mount Rainier National Park , park superintendent David Uberuaga said last week.
The 88-year-old, 117-room Paradise Inn and a newer annex next door would undergo retrofitting to meet earthquake hazards and fire codes, he said.
The park still needs to get the money from Congress.

Seattle: Cabbies on road can’t use phones
The Seattle City Council on Tuesday voted 7-0 to bar taxi drivers from talking on cell phones while transporting a fare. The new taxi ordinance also increases fares and improves security. Cabbies will be allowed to answer incoming calls, but must limit themselves to taking a number so they can return the call later. The fare increase would raise the minimum initial charge from $1.80 to $2.50 and the per-mile rate from a $1.80 to $2.
