OLYMPIC NATIONAL PARK — Olympic National Park is planning to build public observation areas at the site of the former Glines Canyon Dam so the public can learn about ongoing efforts to restore the Elwha River.
Two dams have been removed in a $325 million river restoration project that began in September 2011.
The Peninsula Daily News said that abutments on both sides of the former Glines Canyon Dam were left in place to eventually serve as observation points.
A park spokeswoman says work on the observation areas would start this fall. The east side could open to the public as early as this winter, while the west side is expected to open in 2015.
Interpretive signs will be added and short trails will provide access to the dam site.
