EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A man accused of gunning down a pastor during a Sunday sermon is mentally unfit to stand trial, a judge ruled Tuesday.
The decision came just days after psychologist Robert Heilbronner reported that his examination of Terry Sedlacek found the suspect to be schizophrenic and unlikely to be able to assist in his defense.
The judge ordered that Sedlacek, 27, be remanded to the custody of the state Department of Human Services, which must report whether there is any probability that Sedlacek’s mental capacity would improve.
A not-guilty plea has been entered on Sedlacek’s behalf on first-degree murder charges stemming from the March 8 shooting at First Baptist Church in Maryville that killed the Rev. Fred Winters.
