EVERETT — For decades, people in northeast Everett have lived with a toxic legacy.
A long-ago smelter left behind soil laden with arsenic. While the worst contamination has been cleared away, the area has never been completely set right.
That toxic legacy may be near its end after an announcement Thursday that the state will receive $44.7 million to clean up contamination in Everett.
The money is part of a $188 million settlement the state received to help repair environmental damage caused by the mining giant Asarco — the largest such payout in the state’s history.
The rest of the money is set aside for the Tacoma Smelter Plume site ($111 million), the B&L Woodwaste site in Pierce County ($22 million) and old mining sites around the state ($10.8 million).
