PENDLETON, Ore. — The city of Pendleton, Oregon, has banned people from decorating public statues.
The issue arose after the bronze statue of rodeo legend Jackson Sundown was moved to Main Street last summer. Starting on Halloween, Pendleton resident Pamela Harmon decorated the statue to correspond with holidays — an act that displeased members of the American Indian community.
Jackson Sundown was a member of the Nez Perce Tribe, and tribal members applauded this week’s unanimous council vote.
The East Oregonian newspaper reports that some council members initially supported the decorations, but came to regret the position after hearing from the tribal community.
Last month, the bronze was adorned with green glasses, an oversized green top hat sporting a shamrock and banner that said, “Kiss me! I’m Irish.”
