PENDLETON, Ore. — Flyovers by F-15 fighter jets at sporting events have returned after the U.S. Air Force put the tradition on hold for two years. But, a flyover at the Pendleton Round-Up is still unlikely this year.
The East Oregonian reports the Air Force recently denied the Round-Up’s request, citing a new policy that restricts flyovers to sporting and holiday events.
In a letter to the Air Force, elected officials stated that the Pendleton Round-Up was worthy of getting a flyover.
An Air Force Press spokeswoman, Jennifer Bentley, says the Air Force approved 450 flyover requests this year, and they typically receive 5,000 requests.
This year’s approvals follow the two-year suspension of flyovers due to budgetary constraints.
Bentley says the Air Force wants to expand flyovers in the future.
