A bill offered by State Rep. Strom Peterson to create a paint-recycling program in the Department of Ecology will have a hearing Tuesday before a State Senate committee.
House Bill 1571 became Peterson’s first bill to clear the House of Representatives when it passed March 5.
HB 1571, which passed the House on a 60-38 vote, will have a hearing in the Senate Committee on energy, environment and telecommunications at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Peterson represents the 21st Legislative District, including most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood and northeast of Lynnwood, all of Mukilteo and part of south Everett. Democrat Peterson is vice chairman of the House Environment Committee and a member of the Capital Budget and Local Government committees.
The bill would require producers of house paint to participate in a stewardship program approved by the Department of Ecology to manage the disposal of leftover paint. It also would prohibit retailers from selling the paint of producers who do not participate in a stewardship program, a requirement that, Peterson said, would ensure that all sold house paint would be disposed of responsibly.
“This is about keeping paint out of landfills and giving people an easy way to get rid of the half-filled paint cans in their garages,” Peterson said when the bill passed the House. “Everyone uses paint — not everyone knows how to get rid of it. This bill makes that easy.”
