KENMORE — A sketchbook with drawings in the style of Picasso was auctioned for the Washington State Department of Revenue for $112,500.
The sketchbook has not been authenticated as the work of the famous artist. The department did not want to spend the money to have it examined by an expert.
The department says it was auctioned Thursday at the James G. Murphy auction house in Kenmore along with other property such as coins and jewelry from unclaimed safe deposit boxes.
The auction includes a total of 2,400 items that were turned over to the department after banks lost touch with the owners and safe deposit box fees went unpaid for five years.
The department holds the auction proceeds for the owners or heirs to claim.
