ARLINGTON — A man died Saturday afternoon after the small aircraft he was flying crashed at Arlington Municipal Airport.
The pilot was the only person aboard the 2006 sportcruiser manufactured by Czech Aircraft Works, said city of Arlington spokeswoman Kristin Banfield. The Arlington police and fire departments responded to an emergency call at 3:50 p.m. on the northwest side of the airport. When fire crews arrived on the scene, the plane was on fire and the pilot was dead, according to Banfield.
The name, age and city of residence of the pilot have not been released. It was not clear if the man was leaving or returning to the airport, Banfield said. The Arlington Police Department and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
“We had a lot of eyewitnesses out here so that’s really helpful for us to know exactly what happened and try to piece it all together,” Banfield said.
Ashlynn Trujillo was working as a hostess at Restaurant NASA near the airport and saw the plane crash.
“I saw the back end of the plane pointing upward toward the sky and nose-diving into the ground and there was a bunch of black smoke and flames,” said Trujillo, 16. “It looked like a big bonfire.”
