EDMONDS – A small pipe bomb was discovered near Sherwood Elementary School in Edmonds on Sunday.
The Snohomish County Bomb Squad responded to a call from police and detonated the device without further incident, said Edmonds police Sgt. Jeff Jones.
A 43-year old Edmonds man who had been playing ball with his son at the school at 22901 106th Ave. W. discovered the device in the northwest corner of the school’s play field, Jones said. He called Edmonds police about 1 p.m.
Edmonds officers arrived and called the Snohomish County Bomb Squad, which includes members of the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, the Everett Police Department, and the State Patrol.
Police described the device as about 10 inches long and about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Constructed from white PVC pipe, it had a fuse extending from one end, while the other end was closed off with black electrician’s tape, Jones said.
The bomb squad used its bomb disposal robot to detonate the device. The bomb was described as simple and one that might cause injury if someone ignited the fuse while holding it, but not one that would cause much damage to a building if it were near one, Jones said.
When located, the device was not near any school building. With school out for summer, no students were present, Jones said. There was no indication of how long the device had been on the play field.
No suspects were identified.
