OLYMPIA — Officials are seeking input from the public on plans for the 260-acre Capitol Lake in Olympia and Tumwater.
The Olympian reported that plans for the man-made reservoir include keeping it as a lake, turning it back into an estuary or having it become a hybrid of both. A committee of state and Thurston County stakeholders is hosting an open house for the public March 9.
The committee is working to complete a long-term management plan for the state-owned lake and plans to submit its findings, including feedback from the public, to the state Legislature by January 2017.
Supporters of turning Capitol Lake back into an estuary say it would be better for water quality and wildlife. Others say keeping it as a lake would be cheaper to maintain.
