FERNDALE — Police in the northwest Washington community of Ferndale are telling downtown business owners to be on the alert after nine similar burglaries.
Since early November, The Bellingham Herald reported that burglars have hit eight businesses, including one store robbed twice. The latest crime was reported this week.
Lt. Bill Hatchett said police have some good leads and a possible suspect, but no probable cause for an arrest. They aren’t sure whether the same person or group is involved in each case.
Still, the crimes share similarities: the burglaries took place after dark, none of the targets had alarms, glass doors were shattered and the criminal checked the register for cash.
Sometimes, the take was as much as $200, sometimes the burglar got nothing. Hatchett said the cost of replacing shattered glass is more than any cash taken.
