Police arrest 2 after slaying

EVERETT – In the second shooting in two days, a man was found dead inside a south Everett apartment Friday.

Police detained two men in connection with the man’s death shortly after receiving reports of shots being fired inside the residence in the 9200 block of Holly Drive, Everett police Sgt. Boyd Bryant said.

Someone called 911 just after 1:30 p.m. and reported shots being fired at the location, a former day care that was recently converted into apartments.

As police arrived, they spotted a car racing away from the area. Officers stopped the car in the 4200 block of 85th Place. They detained the driver, but the passenger ran off. Police had nearby Horizon Elementary School locked down for about 10 minutes while they searched for the second man.

He was found a short time later. He resisted police and an officer used a stun gun to subdue him, Bryant said.

Police do not believe the shooting was random. It was not known if the victim, thought by police to be in his 20s, lived at the residence.

His name was not released Friday. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine how the man died. Police are investigating the case as a homicide.

Several people were inside the building at the time of the shooting. It was unknown Friday if any of them witnessed the shooting. Police had not recovered a weapon.

Lisa Baxter, who lives and works in the area, arrived shortly after the shooting to try to find out any details to take back to her customers at the Amber Lite Tavern. She said she and her neighbors were concerned about police making an arrest.

“I was sent up here to find out what was going on. The neighborhood people are afraid to go home,” Baxter said. “I’ve lived in this neighborhood for 19 years and I’ve never seen so much going on around here.”

Several people drove by the scene and stopped to ask about the police activity, concerned that there had been another shooting.

Police continue to search for a man thought to be responsible for shooting another man, 24, Thursday in the 6800 block of Berkshire Drive, a few miles north of Friday’s incident.

That man was shot while he was sitting in his a car. He is expected to recover from his injuries. Police believe the suspect and the victim know each other.

Police don’t believe the shootings are connected.
