WASHOUGAL — Authorities say they believe one of the bodies found in a Washington home that burned this week belonged to the home’s owner, who was under investigation for sex crimes.
Authorities found at least two bodies in the charred rubble where Steven D. Stanbary lived with his wife and her identical twin sister.
Police say Stanbary was due to turn himself in Thursday.
The 47-year-old’s house caught fire Wednesday. Authorities say a gunman inside fired shots to turn back efforts to extinguish it.
Clark County sheriff’s officials said in a release Saturday they “believe strongly” that one of the bodies was Stanbary. They linked their conclusion to personal effects and items near the remains.
Authorities say identifying the second victim could be difficult, given that identical twins have extremely similar DNA.
