LYNNWOOD — A trip through a fast-food restaurant’s drive-through led a suspected serial bank robber to jail and an appearance in federal court.
The 36-year-old Everett man and an accomplice are suspected of robbing 19 banks — 13 in Snohomish County and six in north King County — since June 29, according to Ray Lauer, FBI spokesman in Seattle.
For months, authorities have been trying to identify the pair, who focused on bank branches inside grocery stores. They drew little notice as one would enter a crowded grocery store and manage to blend in with shoppers after a quick trip to the bank, or disappear outside before anyone but bank employees noticed anything was wrong.
They focused on banks in stores along Highway 99 and the Bothell-Everett Highway, Lauer said.
On Tuesday, half the accused pair’s luck ran out. The suspect had just been placed under surveillance by Lynnwood police, who followed him to the Burger King at 125 128th St. SW about 1:30 p.m. Police arrested him in the drive-through lane. A second person in the vehicle was released, Lauer said.
Investigators are still trying to identify the suspected robber’s partner.
The Everett man was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Seattle Wednesday afternoon.
