CATHCART — An early morning pursuit Monday ended in the Cathcart area after a driver being chased by police went off the road. The stolen car then struck a pole, fence and several trees.
Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the driver and a passenger. A second passenger was hospitalized with injuries from the crash.
A sheriff’s deputy saw the car speeding east on 128th Street SW around 2:30 a.m. The deputy attempted to pull it over, according to a press release.
The driver neared 100 mph along Cathcart Way southwest of Snohomish, sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. He reportedly ran two red lights before going off the road near Glacier Peak High School.
The driver, a 25-year-old man from Everett, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, attempting to elude and possession of a stolen vehicle. Police said the driver was carrying shaved keys, a kind of tool used to steal cars. A gun also was found at the scene.
The driver had two passengers. An 18-year-old man from Everett had warrants for his arrest. A 24-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. She is expected to survive, according to police.
Some elementary school buses in the Snohomish School District were delayed due to the road closure, which lasted several hours.
Another pursuit along Cathcart Way last year ended in a death. An 18-year-old man who was fleeing from police crashed into a tree in September 2015. He had a history of mental health problems, including a recent hospital stay, and reportedly was suicidal.
The sheriff’s office and several other local police departments have enacted stricter rules in recent years regarding high-speed chases.
