SEATTLE — King County prosecutors filed charges Wednesday against a 24-year-old man accused of throwing a cinder block through a police car’s windshield during a riot near the University of Washington.
Officers have not yet been able to find the man to arrest him.
Jerry Mancillas Jr., also known as Gary, was charged with one count of second-degree arson, one count of first-degree malicious mischief and one count of second-degree malicious mischief. In charging papers, Seattle Police Detective Stephen O’Leary wrote that officers identified him from videotapes of the Sept. 28 events near fraternity row.
During the alcohol-fueled fracas, a crowd of hundreds hurled objects at police and burned a mattress on a bonfire. Three police cars were among the vehicles damaged.
The arson charge stems from the tipping of a Volvo sedan, which was then set on fire; the first-degree malicious mischief charge, from the destruction of a city fire hydrant with large rocks and chunks of concrete; and the second-degree malicious mischief charge, from the destruction of the patrol car’s windshield.
O’Leary wrote that detectives went to Mancillas’ apartment and spoke with a man who identified Mancillas as the man in photos of the events and acknowledged that he had been living at the apartment.
The man also told the officers that Mancillas had boasted about taking part in the riot.
Police asked anyone with information about Mancillas’ whereabouts to call 911.
