EDMONDS — The SWAT team was called to an Edmonds neighborhood Saturday to take custody of a man who had barricaded himself in his home after reportedly lunging toward a police officer with a knife.
Police were called about 11:45 a.m. to a home in the 9300 block of 220th Street SW to assist with a 48-year-old man who was reportedly out of control, Edmonds Police Department Sgt. Don Anderson said. The man has a history of mental health issues, Anderson said.
When police arrived, the man reportedly picked up a 6-inch steak knife and lunged at officers, Anderson said. The officers backed away and the man barricaded himself in a room.
Nearby homes were evacuated, and a mental health professional worked with police to try to talk the man out of the house. About 4 p.m., SWAT team members entered the home and forced their way into the room where the suspect was barricaded. Police had to use a Tazer to take him into custody, Anderson said.
Nobody was injured. The man was taken to Stevens Hospital in Edmonds for a mental health evaluation.
